Using your Instant Pot to steam some vegetables is not only something it excels at, it’s also super health and the easiest thing ever!
All you need are good steamer inserts and some veggies of your choice. Not only will you feel so happy at how laughably easy this is to do, you can also steam THREE veggies separately, ALL AT ONCE! Plus, your body will also thank you for a reprieve from some pasta, meat & rice.
OR, still eat the pasta, meat & rice and serve some wonderful steamed veggies as a side!
Here’s How I Made It!:
Start out by taking steamer inserts (I used these Stabil inserts from Ikea because they not only fit into the 6qt and 8qt models perfectly, but they also allow you to keep your vegetables separated in case someone HATES cauliflower and doesn’t want their eggplant touching it – BUT it still allows you to steam at the same time).
Carefully remove the hook on the back with some pliers by following this video here
Place the inserts in the Instant Pot…
…add in some water…
…and add in some veggies of your choice (Note: see the “Jeffrey Sez” section of the recipe). Secure the lid and cook at high pressure.
When done cooking, you’ll have some wonderful steamed vegetables! Remove the lid and remove each insert (these come with handles and even a little tool to remove them so you don’t have to worry about burning your hand while removing).
Place your veggies in bowls…
…and season them as you wish.
Look at that lovely cauliflower…
…and that soft green zucchini!
Look! It’s a trifecta of veggies – all steamed AT THE SAME TIME! (and looks like a hidden Mickey!)

A super HEALTHY and QUICK way to enjoy vegetables. And be like Nomi Malone and have them with brown rice!
And eat ’em all or no dessert for you!
- Three different types of vegetables of your choice, chopped (I used eggplant, zucchini and cauliflower)
- Any seasonings you wish (drizzled olive oil, salt, pepper, grated parmesan, butter, etc.)
- Place the three boiler inserts inside your Instant Pot (they’ll fit in a 6qt or 8qt)
- Add 1 cup of water
- Place the chopped veggies of your choice in each of the Stabil inserts. (Click here to watch my video on them and how to easily adjust them for the Instant Pot). *See the “Jeffrey Sez” section on how to mix and match veggies
- Secure the lid and hit “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” High Pressure for 4 minutes if you want the veggies steamed nice and soft; or 2 minutes if you want them a little firmer; or 0 minutes if you want it substantial (if steaming broccoli, go for 0 minutes).
- Quick release when done
- Season however you wish, whether it be with some drizzled olive oil, salt, pepper, grated parmesan or a little butter
Just be aware that some veggies take longer to steam than others, so plan which veggies you’re cooking together accordingly based on how long they take to steam. For instance, if you’re planning to steam potatoes and broccoli, you will not be able to do them at the same time because broccoli shouldn’t be steamed for longer than 2 – or even 0 – minutes (it will fall apart) and potatoes need at least 8 minutes to soften. So, in short, steam firmer veggies that take longer to cook (such as potatoes and carrots) together and lighter veggies that cook quickly (such as eggplant, cauliflower, broccoli and squash) together.
“But Jeff, why didn’t you use the “Steam” function?” Because it does the exact same thing the “Pressure Cook” or “Manual” button does except it’s pre-set at a specific time. This way, I can set/adjust the time for how long I want.
